Brubeck was simply one of the best musicians of the 20th century. He was also a decent person. He wrote the Catholic mass “To Hope! A Celebration.” Aptly named, as you can see from the pure joy he exudes during the performance.
As a footnote to show his character, the second video is from a Ken Burns documentary on jazz, where Brubeck talks about the returning to US soil from WWII, and the treatment of the black musicians in his band. He recalled the first black man he ever met, tearfully detailing that meeting.
